Use of Glycerol in Dairy Rations
نویسنده
چکیده
Increased cost of common feedstuffs and increased availability of coproducts from plant-based biofuel manufacturing has enhanced interest in the use of these coproducts in rations for dairy cattle (Donkin and Doane, 2007). Glycerol (commonly marketed as crude glycerine with a glycerol content of approximately 80%) is a coproduct produced during biodiesel production from soybean oil and is becoming available as a feedstuff within the dairy industry. The purpose of this paper will be to review the metabolism of glycerol in the cow, to review recent research focused on feeding glycerol as a glucogenic supplement to transition cows, and to review use of glycerol in rations for lactating dairy cows.

Glycerol as a Feed Ingredient in Dairy Rations
The term ‘bio-diesel’ is used to describe the methyl or sometimes ethyl esters produced from oilseed crops. Every 10 gallons of biodiesel produced generates about 7.6 lb of crude glycerol. According to the National Biodiesel Board, the production of biodiesel in the U.S. over the next decade is expected to grow (http:// www.biodiesel.org/). Current annual production is 395 million gallons and p...
متن کاملFeeding value of glycerol as a replacement for corn grain in rations fed to lactating dairy cows.
Growth of the corn ethanol industry has created a need for alternatives to corn for lactating dairy cows. Concurrent expansion in soydiesel production is expected to increase availability and promote favorable pricing for glycerol, a primary co-product material. The objective of this study was to determine the feeding value of glycerol as a replacement for corn in diets fed to lactating dairy c...
متن کاملOverview of Fat Digestion and Metabolism in Dairy Cows
Over the last 25 years, the use of supplemental fats and oils in dairy cow rations has developed to the point where it now is a standard practice. Fats are supplemented to increase ration energy density, which ideally will lead to increased energy intake if dry matter intake is not decreased extensively. In turn, increased energy intake should improve energy balance and benefit body condition, ...
متن کاملInvestigating the Setbacks in Conventional Dairy Farms by the Follow-Up of Their Potential and Effective Milk Yields
The present study investigates the gap between the daily milk production potential and the effective milk yields in six herds. These two parameters and their changes were observed in the Gharb irrigation scheme (northwest of Morocco), during a five months study period. They were analyzed in relation to the changes in the rations of the cows and in their live weights. Results reveal that under c...
متن کاملUtilization and Addition Sugars to Ruminants Rations
Responses to sugars in dry or liquid formvary from study to study. When fed in proper amounts, sugars should not depress ruminalpH, and there is some evidence that they actuallyhelp toprevent a drop in pH after consuming largemeals of concentrate by maintaining a highernumberoflactate-fermenting bacteria. Adding sugars doesprioritize the need for rumen degraded protein (RDP).we all know, sugars...
